Spring 2010

Design a 2011 calendar using only typography
The students were challenged to create a calendar that used typography to represent the passing of time while considering structure, rhythm, dimension, scale and even emotion. Rachel took the project to the next level by utilizing rubylith so that what appeared to be patterns and colors was actually information. The rubylith could be moved so that only the current month is visible.

Spring 2011

Re-design a magazine including the cover, table of contents, one feature and one column
The students were able to choose the magazine they wanted to re-design, and the challenge was to figure out what wasn’t working with the current layout design-wise, and find a way to make it more successful in their re-design. This is the first time the students are asked to set and layout large quantities of type and use InDesign’s publication capabilities including master pages, paragraph styles, linked text boxes, etc.
